AI Slop is Everywhere - and its getting worse
You are reading, skimming, watching, and listening to it. It’s seemingly everywhere, and there’s more of it than ever before—with tons more on the way. Welcome to the world of AI slop
AI slop is the flood of low-quality, generic, or soulless AI-generated content that clutters the digital space. It’s invading inboxes, social media feeds, corporate pitches, and beyond. We see it, we know it, we feel it:
Graphics with eerie, unnatural halos
AI-generated artwork with mangled text
Blog posts that somehow manage to be both overly polished and completely generic
Social media posts that scream, “A machine made this.”
How bad is the flood? During my recent visit to CES, almost every booth had AI slapped onto whatever they were making or doing. While some ideas were truly innovative, many felt like solutions in search of a problem.
And then there’s the data. A study published in Wired by AI detection startup Originality AI estimates that over 54% of longer English-language posts on LinkedIn are likely AI-generated.
Right now, “AI” are magic letters that move markets—but at what cost?
What is AI Slop?
AI slop refers to the proliferation of poorly crafted, low-effort, or unpolished AI-generated content that lacks coherence, quality, originality, or purpose. It’s content that feels generic, repetitive, and obviously machine-made, reflecting a lack of human oversight or creativity.
This SNL video featuring Timothée Chalamet and Bowen Yang as AI education podcasters hilariously captures the absurdity of AI-generated content.
How Do You Know It’s AI Slop?
There are a few dead giveaways:
Buzzword Overload – AI-generated content leans too hard on trendy jargon, making it feel unnatural and out of touch.
Lack of Fresh Ideas – Instead of delivering unique insights, AI regurgitates formulaic content, recycling the same tired phrases.
Fact-Checking Fails – AI sometimes pulls from outdated or incorrect sources, leading to misinformation and credibility risks.
Robotic Vibe – AI struggles to capture a brand’s tone, resulting in content that feels flat, impersonal, and disconnected.
The Issues with AI Slop in Marketing and Podcasting
For creators, the danger lies in taking shortcuts that erode authenticity and break trust with audiences. AI has the power to enhance marketing and podcasting, but when relied on too heavily, the result is AI slop—leading to serious consequences:
Loss of Brand Voice – AI struggles with nuance. While it can mimic patterns, it lacks the emotional intelligence and creative subtlety that define a strong brand. In podcasting, this is especially crucial—listeners connect with hosts who feel real. If AI slop creeps into scripts or voiceovers, podcasts risk sounding robotic and losing the intimacy that drives loyalty.
Decreased Trust – Audiences are savvier than ever at spotting AI-generated content. In podcasting, they can tell when an ad, voiceover, or even an entire episode feels automated. When AI comes across as inauthentic, it’s not just the content that suffers—it’s the brand’s credibility.
Reputation Damage – AI-generated content can be inaccurate or tone-deaf, which is a quick way to destroy trust. AI tools process massive amounts of data, but they lack context and judgment. A brand that falls into the AI slop trap may struggle to regain credibility—especially in an era where bad content spreads fast.
Audience Disengagement – Content that feels generic or irrelevant gets ignored. In podcasting, this is particularly dangerous—listeners won’t hesitate to tune out if a show loses its human spark.
The Sonic Slop Problem: AI’s Impact on Audio Content
AI-generated content isn’t just polluting blogs and social media—it’s creeping into audio, too. “Sonic slop”™ is the rise of AI-generated voiceovers, scripts, and entire podcast episodes that lack personality, warmth, and credibility.
How AI Slop Shows Up in Audio & Podcasting:
Synthetic Voices – AI-generated voices are improving, but they still struggle with natural rhythm, emotional nuance, and spontaneity.
Scripted-to-Death Sound – AI-written podcast scripts can be robotic, predictable, and awkward, making conversations feel staged rather than organic.
Over-Automated Ads – Some brands use AI-generated audio ads that sound stiff and unnatural, making listeners tune out rather than engage.
Resisting Over-Optimization
For podcasters and broadcasters, AI isn’t the enemy of creativity—it’s a tool that, when used thoughtfully, can enhance storytelling, streamline workflows, and expand reach.
For example, AI-powered multilingual versions of episodes are a game-changer. But while AI can help with editing, scripting, and promo materials, the human touch is irreplaceable.
Keep Your Content Human
If brands and creators lean too hard on AI, they risk drowning in a sea of uninspired, forgettable content. The key is to balance efficiency with authenticity, keeping content creative, intentional, and unmistakably human.
As Warren Buffett wisely put it:
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.”
The goal isn’t to produce volumes of factory-style content—it’s to connect with audiences in a way that matters.
We are conducting an afternoon long workshop on local podcasts Monday, March 10 at the Borrell Local Media Conference in Phoenix . We have a fantastic group of trailblazers paving the way for local podcasts including iHeart Media, City Cast Network, St. Louis Magazine and Hubbard Radio.
